Enugu: Gun men shoot police officer, two others

It was another hellish day in Enugu as gun men reportedly shoot about three persons including a senior police officer.

The senior police officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP simply identified as Matthew popularly known as Escalo with two other persons at Ugwu rice, along Opanda/Adani road in Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu Wednesday night on their way back to Adani community.

Our source revealed that “Escalo who is a senior police officer in Adani Divisional headquarters with two other civilians were shot on their way back to Adani last night last night.”

Narrating further, our source explained that ” the police officer was not on duty when the incident happened. He was just coming back from Opanda community with his car when he and other road users ran into the gun men who may be probably waiting for whom to rob or kidnap.

“When the police saw what was happening, he then wanted to turn back but it was already too late. As he jumped out of his car to run into the bush, these hoodlums emptied some bullets onto his legs. He endured it and ran into the bush where he started making calls to his colleagues who came to his rescue.”

Asked if the gun men were apprehended, our source stressed that ” by the time the police came, they have already run away.”

Our reporter gathered that the police officer has been admitted at undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.

WITHIN NIGERIA gathered Opanda /Adani road has become one of the dangerous roads in the state.

Kidnapping, rape and killing, mostly by Fulani herdsmen have become rife on the road for close to three years.

In April last year, the Divisional Police headquarters in Adani was set ablaze by unknown gunmen.

When contacted on phone the Police Public Relations Officer Enugu state police command Daniel Ndukwe couldn’t pick up his call but a senior police officer in Adani Divisional told our reporter that the incident is being investigated.
