Hoodlums have attacked the Atani Police Station in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State and engaged policemen on duty in a fierce gun battle.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, in their large numbers, attacked the police station late Saturday.

During the exchange of gunfire, some policemen sustained injuries.

According to PUNCH, an eyewitness, who did not disclose his name for security reasons, said the hoodlums attacked the police checkpoint at the Atani Road Junction before invading the police station.

He said, “The hoodlums came in two vehicles and two motorcycles. They first attacked the police checkpoint in the area where one of the security officers was gunned down before they proceeded to the police station.

“The officers at the station engaged them in a serious gun battle and prevented them from gaining entry into the facility.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident, said the superior firepower of the policemen prevented the hoodlums from gaining entry into the station.

Ikenga said, “The incident happened around 4.45pm on Saturday. Due to the superior firepower of the operatives, the hoodlums could not gain entry but during the gun battle, one of the policemen sustained serious injuries from live bullets and he is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.”
