UNILORIN: Windy rain destroys ASUU, SSANU secretariats, others on campus

At the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), windy rain has caused chaos and destroyed property worth millions of dollars.

On the weekend, the institution experienced rain and a strong wind.

The mast of the Network Operating Centre (NOC), which houses several internet radios, the lecture halls for chemical engineering and life sciences, the department of biochemical engineering, the computer-based test (CBT) centers, where about 40 computers were impacted, the geology and mineral resources department, electric poles, and the General Studies Division (GNS) Unit are a few of the facilities that were impacted.

The Department of Adult Education, the Admission Office, the Security Unit, the new Anatomy Building (College of Medicine), the Directorate of Legal Services Unit, the UNILORIN Stadium, the Education Technology Workshop, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities’ (SSANU) secretariats are among the others.

The Faculty of Law, the historic University Library, the Language Laboratory (College of Arts), the Counseling and Human Development Centre, and the Student Affairs Unit were also destroyed by the windy rain.

Commenting on the situation, UNILORIN Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN) expressed conflicting emotions regarding the destruction the windy rainstorm had caused on the university’s campus.

Egbewole, who led other principal officers on a campus-wide tour to assess the extent of the damage caused by the rain, expressed his gratitude that it fell during a break for students because the Federal Government had ordered that all universities be closed during the general election period in 2023.

He claimed that without the pause, no one could have predicted the scope and effects of the mayhem.
