Nigeria Elections: Edo herbalist invokes gods against INEC, Yakubu

Two weeks after the winner of the February 25 presidential election was announced, some Nigerians are still refusing to accept the outcome.

Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was declared President-elect by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on March 1.

However, the outcome is being challenged by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP.

In a viral video, a native doctor from Edo State accused INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu and others of allegedly undermining the people’s will.

The herbalist claimed that INEC officials’ days are numbered, claiming that he had enlisted the help of Benin’s gods to deal with them before the month of May.

“Peter Obi’s result was taken to another person by the INEC Chairman. You have taken the glory of this land to a wrong person. Today, I have called the spirit of death.

“This thing you have done to this country, you’ll never find peace…you and all those that are working for you. The gods of this land is sending a message.

“Our people abroad are tired, they want to come back home because they want a new Nigeria.. You said no way. You’ll never find peace. Shame and disgrace will locate you,” he said.

The outcome of the presidential election remains controversial after violence in many areas and irregularities including over voting, alteration of results, among others.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, this week stressed that Yakubu “manipulated” the poll in favour of the APC and asked him to resign.

The opposition said Yakubu allegedly committed “serious electoral offence” and “betrayed the trust, confidence and hope Nigerians” reposed in him and the commission.

Recall that a statement by the International Republican Institute, IRI, and the National Democratic Institute, NDI, joint mission declared that INEC lacked transparency during the polls.
