President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law a bill requiring the country’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu, to name his cabinet within 60 days of taking the oath of office.
WITHIN NIGERIA understands the bill requires Presidents and Governors to submit the names of persons nominated as Ministers or Commissioners for confirmation by the Senate or State Houses of Assembly within sixty days of taking the oath of office.
It should be noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election on March 1.
The bill signed by Buhari is one of 16 constitution amendment bills signed into law by President Buhari, according to a statement issued on Friday by Ahmed Wase, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
President Buhari faced harsh criticism in 2015 for the delay in naming cabinet members; it took him up to six months to appoint ministers in 2015.
The President also signed bills to remove railway, electricity generation, and prison services from the exclusive legislative list.
States will now be able to generate and distribute electricity, as well as operate railways, without seeking permission from the federal government.
Another bill signed by the President granted financial independence to state legislatures and the judiciary.
