The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)in partnership with the state ministry of Women and Social Welfare, has trained 60 people in Child Protection Case Management and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) in Anambra State.
The training which was held in Awka included participants drawn from teachers, social welfare and health officers, religious and youth leaders of the seven local government areas hugely affected by flood.
In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Hon. Ify Obinabo, expressed satisfaction about the commitment and dedication of the participants towards the exercise.
The women and social welfare boss urged participants to step down the knowledge acquired during the training in their communities, to ensure that the goal of the project is achieved.
A Child Protection Specialist, Dr Victor Atuchukwu, said the three-day capacity building workshop was informed by last year’s ravaging flood in seven local governments.
The Child Protection Specialist explained that the training is targeted at empowering and providing trainees with mental health and psychosocial interventions to survivors, to ensure they were mentally stable to continue with their lives.
Dr Atuchukwu noted that Unicef is leveraging on the platform provided by the Ministries of Women Affairs, Health and Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) to provide the interventions.
