Zenith Bank debunks reports of MD’s arrest

It said this in an official statement submitted to the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Wednesday

Zenith Bank Plc has refuted allegations suggesting that its Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, was apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection to the ongoing investigation involving the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

In an official statement submitted to the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Wednesday, the bank categorically dismissed the claims of Onyeagwu’s arrest as entirely untrue, asserting that the MD had neither been arrested nor held in detention by the EFCC.

“We wish to clarify that these reports are entirely false.

“The Group Managing Director was not arrested or detained by the EFCC or any other anti-graft agency and is currently fulfilling his duties at the bank,” read part of the statement signed by the bank’s Company Secretary/General Counsel, Michael Otu.

There were reports on Tuesday that senior bank executives were grilled by the anti-graft agency as part of ongoing investigation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation as well as the suspended minister, Betta Edu.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Olumuyiwa Enitan, has taken over the management of the ministry as directed by President Bola Tinubu following Edu’s suspension.
