Team Nigeria concluded their remarkable performance in athletics at the 2023 African Games in Ghana with a flourish, clinching two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals on the event’s final day.

Chinecherem Nnamdi shattered the national record to claim gold in the men’s javelin event. At the same time, Esther Joseph, Patience Okon-George, Brittany Ogunmokun, and Omolara Ogunmakinju secured gold in the women’s 4x400m final.

Adding to the haul were silver medals earned by Olayinka Olajide in the women’s 200m and Sade Olatoye in the women’s shot put. Consider Ekanem seized bronze in the men’s 200m, marking his debut on the international stage.

These stellar performances elevated Nigeria’s athletics tally to 11 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals, totalling 21 medals overall.

Olajide’s silver marked the day’s first triumph for Team Nigeria, showcasing a new personal best in the women’s 200m. Ekanem, bouncing back from a near miss in the men’s 100m, secured bronze in the 200m with an impressive time.

Following Olatoye’s bronze in shot put, Nnamdi soared to gold in the men’s javelin, setting a new national record with a remarkable throw. The women’s 4x400m relay team capped off Nigeria’s success with a triumphant gold, clocking an impressive time.

While Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m relay quartet fell short of gold, their performance still garnered bronze, showcasing Nigeria’s depth in athletics. Gambia claimed victory in the event, setting a Games record.

Nigeria maintained a commanding lead in the athletics table, with Ethiopia trailing closely behind and South Africa securing the third spot.

Nigeria’s stellar performance underscores its dominance in athletics and highlights the exceptional talent within the nation’s sports fraternity.
