Eid-el-Fitr tragedy: Many feared dead as vehicle veers off Third Mainland Bridge, plunges into Lagoon


A vehicle has plunged into the lagoon in Lagos State after it skidded off the newly rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge.

A yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons reportedly lost their lives in the tragic incident.

The fatal mishap happened on Wednesday, the day of Eid-el-fitri, when Nigerian Muslims celebrated the end of Ramadan

One Akinola Adeniyi, who claimed to have witnessed the incident unfold, disclosed that the accident happened at around 11.30 am, when the yet to be ascertained vehicle en route Iyana-Oworo to Island route suddenly plunged into the Lagoon.

According to Adeniyi, the accident was caused by excessive speeding on the part of the driver of the ill-fated vehicle.

Rescue team, including men of the Lagos State Emergency Management LASEMA, and the Police, among others have arrived at the scene for the rescue mission.

The incident caused a traffic jam on the Third Mainland Bridge towards the Island.

Meanwhile, LASEMA said the agency was still in the process of ascertaining those who were involved in the accident
