Senator Abba Moro, the Senate minority Leader, has criticized the recent call for the resignation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Eliya Damagum, labelling it “ill-timed and inappropriate.”
Moro, representing Benue South in the National Assembly, voiced his perspective over the weekend in response to the demand made by Ikenga Ugochinyere, the member representing Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo State.
Ugochinyere accused Damagum of allegedly siding with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and neglecting to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting since assuming the role of acting national chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s tenure.
Moro countered Ugochinyere’s assertion, stating it as a personal opinion that doesn’t represent the views of PDP federal lawmakers, particularly PDP senators. He deemed the timing of the call, just before the party’s impending NEC meeting, unnecessary turmoil.
According to Moro, the upcoming NEC meeting allows members to comprehensively express their views on the party’s affairs and national issues. He emphasized that the position of national chairman shouldn’t be subject to suggestions for openness or regional zoning apart from the North Central, as stipulated by the party’s constitution.
Highlighting the party’s constitutional provision for two deputy chairmen, Moro clarified that in the event of a vacancy, the deputy chairman from the region of the acting national chairman would temporarily assume the role.
