Vice-President Kashim Shettima has hailed the late former governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, as a stalwart of Nigerian nationhood and a champion of democracy.
Shettima, along with other prominent figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, ex-governor of Ogun State Olusegun Osoba, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, gathered for a night of tributes in honour of Ezeife in Abuja on Monday.
Represented by former FCT Minister Dr. Aliyu Moddibo, Shettima lauded Ezeife’s remarkable journey from humble beginnings to earning a PhD in Economics from Harvard University, USA. He praised Ezeife’s advocacy for the Igbo community and his role as a mentor to individuals across Nigeria.
Senate President Akpabio, represented by his Chief of Staff Sylvester Okonkwo, hailed Ezeife as a strong advocate for a united Nigeria and emphasized his efforts towards national unity.
Similarly, Osoba, serving as the event’s chairman, highlighted Ezeife’s contributions to democracy alongside other Igbo leaders during the struggle against the Abacha military regime. He reminisced about their friendship dating back to the Nigerian Civil War talks in Uganda.
Deputy Speaker Kalu urged young politicians to emulate Ezeife’s modest lifestyle and integrity.
The gathering, attended by dignitaries such as former Osun State Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governors of Imo State Achike Udenwa, Rochas Okorocha, and Emeka Ihedioha, celebrated Ezeife’s legacy as a symbol of national unity and democracy.
Ezeife, who passed away on December 14, 2023, at the age of 86, will be laid to rest in Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra State, over the weekend.
