Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has dismissed rumours of a conflict between him and his predecessor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.
He urged politicians in the state to reject bitterness and work toward unity.
During a Christmas visit to Dickson’s country home in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area, Diri emphasized the importance of collaboration for the state’s development.
The governor, accompanied by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, credited Dickson for his pivotal role in becoming governor and reaffirmed his commitment to working with him.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Daniel Alabrah, on Tuesday, Diri condemned the spread of baseless rumours, stating that his visit was aimed at quelling speculations of discord. He described Dickson as a mentor and pledged to address any differences amicably.
“There is too much bitterness in the political landscape of our state,” Diri said. “This visit is a step toward reducing that. Politics should not be about enmity but about service. God gives power, but He uses men. In my case, He used the immediate past governor to ensure a smooth transition.”
Diri acknowledged that, as governor, his decisions might not always be perfect and could sometimes cause offence. However, he stressed the importance of dialogue and reconciliation in resolving misunderstandings.
“Politics will come and go, but we will remain here as brothers. Let us demonstrate love and unity, not just in words but through actions,” he added.
In his remarks, Senator Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West in the National Assembly, dismissed attempts by mischief-makers to create division between him and Diri.
He reiterated his commitment to supporting the governor in advancing the state’s development.
“This visit highlights the strong personal and familial relationship we share,” Dickson said. “It dispels negativity and strengthens our focus on working together for Bayelsa’s progress.”
Both leaders emphasized that their shared goal remains the growth and prosperity of Bayelsa State, calling on others to prioritize unity and cooperation over division.
