142 LGAs Now Free of Open Defecation – Minister

Open Defecation

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, has highlighted the importance of a clean environment and proper sanitation in improving public health nationwide.

Speaking during a visit to the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama, Prof. Utsev revealed that the “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” campaign, launched in 2019, has helped increase the number of local government areas (LGAs) free from open defecation from 102 to 142 under the current administration.

He explained that officials from his ministry met with Archbishop Kaigama to discuss strategies for eradicating open defecation nationwide by 2030.

The minister stressed the crucial role of religious institutions in the initiative.

He urged religious leaders to incorporate messages on sanitation and human dignity into their teachings to encourage positive behavioural changes in communities.

In response, Archbishop Kaigama emphasized the need for the government to involve all stakeholders to ensure an effective campaign.
