75 die in Edo road accidents


A litany of road accidents in Edo State has claimed the lives of seventy-five people, a road safety official said on Monday.

The auto crashes that happened in the first six months of the year, between January and June, 2025.

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Cyril Mathew, made the disclosure while addressing newsmen on Monday in Benin City.

Mathew said the victims lost their lives in 101 road crashes that occurred in the state.

According to him, 903 passengers were involved in the accidents, 304 sustained injuries while 75 persons lost their lives within the period under review.

While giving a further breakdown of the tragic mishaps, he stated that 15 passengers were killed in January, 18 in February, 14 in March, 4 in April, 5 in May, while 19 died in June.

He cited brake failure, overspending, dangerous driving, use of a phone, route violation, among others, by drivers as causes of the accidents.

The FRSC Sector Commander said the Command has stepped up campaigns across the state to sensitise motorists on the need to imbibe safety culture on the road to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

He said the campaigns are part of efforts aimed at changing the road crash narrative in the state.

He, however, warned motorists against overloading, drunk driving, night driving, use of the phone and speeding for their safety and that of the passengers.

He called on stakeholders to work together with the corps to ensure zero road traffic crashes in the state.
