The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities in honour of the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari died on Saturday, 13 July, 2025, in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82.
The announcement of the suspension was made in a statement signed by the clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana.
The suspension, which affects both chambers of the legislature, will last until Tuesday, 22 July, 2025.
Ogunlana said, “In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of Representatives to inform members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July 2025.”
Lawmakers were also advised to adjust their personal and official schedules for full participation in the burial and tribute events.
The statement noted that both the president of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, endorsed the suspension.
The leadership of the National Assembly expressed deep sympathies to the country and the bereaved family.
It stated, “On behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly, the leadership of both chambers extends heartfelt condolences to: the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the government and people of Katsina State; his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family.”
Buhari, a former military ruler and two-term civilian president, was praised for his devotion to national unity and personal integrity.
Ogunlana added, “President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity. May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
