University of Maiduguri shouldn’t be renamed after Buhari, Shehu Sani tells Tinubu

Former federal lawmaker from Kaduna State, Senator Shehu Sani, has kicked against the renaming of University of Maiduguri after the late former President Muhammadu.

Last Thursday, President Bola Tinubu renamed the university as Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former president.

The decision, announced during a session of tributes by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, to Buhari, has elicited mixed reactions.

However, the renaming has not been positively received by Nigerians, especially current and former students of the tertiary, who have heavily criticised the moved.

Weighing on the controversy, Shehu Sani said there is absolutely no point renaming the University after Buhari.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Sani stated that the university should remain known as UNIMAID.

He noted that many current and former students of the University are unhappy with the decision but can’t voice their grievance because it is named after Buhari

He wrote, “Many former and present students of the University of Maiduguri are not happy about the renaming of their prestigious university, but they are shy or afraid of rejecting or condemning it because of the person whose name was used.

“It’s not that difficult to say that UNIMAID should remain UNIMAID and nothing else. So far all our airports and train stations have been renamed.”
