- Medical workers call for sustainable engagement aimed at preventing future strikes and improving healthcare delivery in Abuja.
- Association praises Wike’s intervention, citing his leadership as key to resolving the prolonged strike and restoring trust in governance.
Doctors under the Federal Capital Territory chapter of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners have called off their strike.
The doctors suspended the industrial action on Sunday after the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, intervened and addressed part of their welfare demands.
Chairman of the association, Dr Okoreaffia Ogbonnaya, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.
He said the minister’s leadership had restored confidence in the government’s readiness to resolve the crisis.
The strike, which lasted three months, was over non-payment of salaries, allowances and other outstanding entitlements by the Area Council Service Commission.
“We acknowledge and deeply appreciate his demonstrated commitment to addressing the welfare concerns of our members, including the initial payments received as part of the resolution process, displaying leadership and responsiveness which have been instrumental in restoring hope and confidence among healthcare workers in the FCT,” the statement read.
“In light of these developments, the NAGGMDP FCT branch hereby announces the immediate suspension of the three-month industrial action and urges all members to return to work immediately as we continue constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.”
The association also urged its members to resume work immediately across all service points in the FCT.
It noted that further engagements would continue with the FCT Administration and the Area Council Chairmen to settle all outstanding demands.
“We are committed to working closely with the FCT Administration and Area Council Chairmen to ensure the prompt payment of all pending salaries, allowances, and entitlements.
“Once again, we thank the Honourable Minister for his unwavering dedication to improving healthcare delivery and workers’ welfare in the FCT.
“We welcome efforts of dialogue and collaboration towards a sustainable and efficient healthcare system for all residents.”
