The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Monday met with retired police officers protesting over poor welfare in Abuja.
The meeting took place at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Earlier in the day, the aggrieved retirees had stormed the National Assembly to demand their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme.
The former officers, many of whom are elderly, stood under the rain chanting anti-government songs and holding placards.
The inspector-general had earlier promised to personally engage with the retired officers over their grievances on retirement benefits.
While addressing the protesters, Egbetokun said the welfare of retired officers was being addressed by the Police Force.
He said, “The exit of the Force from the contributory pension scheme is not something that can be activated immediately.”
He urged the protest leaders not to spread misleading information about the position of the police authorities on the matter.
Egbetokun said, “the Force cannot abandon their own.”
