The Senate has denied reports of a clash between the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and the Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, during a recent executive session.
The executive session was held to deliberate on whether the Senate should proceed on its annual recess.
In a statement on Sunday, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Yemi Adaramodu, described the reports as “false” and “misleading”.
Adaramodu said the publications misrepresented the parliamentary traditions and practices that govern legislative engagements across the world.
He explained that debates, questions and interpellations were standard procedures for discussing any initiative before approval or authorisation.
“The Senate, as the country’s highest law-making body, is not different in any way,” the spokesman said.
“Like other parliaments, every bill, motion and proposal undergoes rigorous scrutiny in our chamber, with robust debates held in the interest of over 230 million Nigerians.”
Adaramodu clarified that debates, whether in the chamber or committee room, should not be mistaken for altercations or cracks within the leadership ranks.
