Bandits kill Sokoto farmers, flee to Niger Republic

Bandits terrorising Nigeria’s Northwest region have killed two farmers in Sokoto State in a renewed wave of attacks.

The farmers were killed when the bandits, suspected to be members of the notorious Lakurawa gang, attacked Ayama village in the Balle District.

The incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29, while the victims were working on their farmland at the village outskirts, Zagazola Makama, a media outlet focused on security, reports.

The Zagazola said attackers rode on motorcycles and opened fire with sophisticated weapons, killing two men on the spot. Those killed are Tukur Muhammed, 30, and Sa’ad Muhammed.

Troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA swiftly responded to the attack and engaged the bandits in a gunfight. Despite the effort, the assailants managed to escape across the border into the neighbouring Niger Republic.

The bodies of the slain farmers were taken to a hospital for documentation and burial.

In the aftermath of the attack, security patrols in the area have been intensified to prevent further incursions.
