Nine die in Jigawa boat mishap


A boat accident in Jigawa State has claimed the lives of at least nine people, authorities have said.

The deceased met their end after the boat capsized in the Taura Local Government Area (LGA) of the northwest state.

The boat, which carried 17 passengers, mostly young girls, capsized halfway into a journey between Digawa Village in Jahun LGA and Zangon Maje Village in Taura LGA.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed this in a statement shared via X on Thursday, stating that eight passengers were rescued alive by local divers.

The statement titled, “NEMA Kano Operations Office Assesses Boat Mishap at Zangon Maje Village, Taura LGA, Jigawa State – 30th July 2025”, read: “The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, conducted an assessment of the recent boat mishap that occurred at Zangon Maje Village in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

“Findings revealed that the tragic incident took place on Sunday, 27th July 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m. The boat, which was carrying 17 passengers, mostly young girls, capsized mid-journey while travelling from Digawa Village in Jahun Local Government Area to Zangon Maje Village, Taura LGA.

“Upon the arrival of the NEMA team at the scene, it was confirmed that eight individuals were rescued alive by local divers, while nine others were unfortunately confirmed dead.

“NEMA, in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (JSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), and local government officials, sensitised the community on the importance of adhering to safety protocols while travelling by water.

“As part of the response efforts, NIWA also donated life jackets to the community.”
