The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said it would only offer former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic ticket to contest the 2027 presidential election on one condition.
Daniel Woyengikuro, the National Financial Secretary of the party, mulled the possibility of Jonathan running on the PDP platform during an interview with Vanguard.
Woyengikuro said Jonathan would only get the PDP presidential ticket if he returns to the party and play a more active political role.
He said: “Is he not the best candidate for us at this moment? He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now.”
He noted that Jonathan is a national leader of the party and he would back an automatic ticket for him.
“Aside from [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo, the next person in line is him. Goodluck Jonathan is the national leader of this party.”
When asked directly if PDP would consider granting Jonathan an automatic ticket, Woyengikuro replied: “For me, that’s what I firmly stand for. You can quote me anywhere — I want him to come.
“An automatic ticket for him, as it stands now. Because we must salvage both this party and the nation.”
