Tinubu orders immediate rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees

Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to commence the immediate execution of free healthcare services for low-income retirees.

The president gave the directive during a briefing with PenCom’s director general, Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, the initiative forms a key part of Tinubu’s commitment to social welfare for vulnerable groups.

“He also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS,” the statement reads.

Tinubu equally directed PenCom to urgently resolve the lingering pension issues affecting police officers, stating that those who serve the country deserve a peaceful retirement.

During the meeting, Oloworaran outlined strategies to protect pension fund assets from devaluation caused by inflation and economic pressures.

She revealed plans to introduce foreign currency contributions, which would allow Nigerians living abroad to participate in the pension system.

The PenCom boss assured the president that efforts are underway to safeguard pensioners’ interests and ensure the integrity of retirement savings.

Responding, Tinubu expressed full support for the commission’s proposed reforms and reiterated his administration’s dedication to safeguarding citizens’ futures.

“Our government is focused on inclusive growth. We are determined to protect ordinary Nigerians and ensure retirees live with dignity,” Tinubu said.
