At least five people, including a police officer, have been killed in an attack by bandits on a community in Kwara State.
The incident happened in Babanla community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State on Friday, August 8.
The Police Commissioner for the State, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the killings on Saturday, adding that the assailants also attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters and the market in the town.
He identified the slain police officer as Adejumo Wasiu, noting that the attackers stormed the community in their hundreds riding on motorcycles and started shooting sporadically.
Ojo made this known after a joint on-site assessment of the security situation of the area was conducted with the state Director, Department of State Services, DSS.
According to the police commissioner, “On 8th August 2025, armed criminals numbering in their hundreds, riding on motorcycles, invaded Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters and raided the market.
“The assailants fired sporadically, killing five people, including a police officer, Adejumo Wasiu. A swift and coordinated response by Police operatives, Nigeria Army personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters repelled the attack, restored order, and initiated a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators.”
The joint security delegation also toured key locations in the community, including the market, the Divisional Police Headquarters, and surrounding areas to ensure that stability has been fully restored.
A statement by the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in Ilorin, said the Commissioner of Police ordered sustained armed patrols, continuous intelligence gathering, and the deployment of specialised tracking teams.
“Similarly, the DSS pledged continuous intelligence support to apprehend all those involved in the attack,” the statement added.
The police command reiterated its unwavering commitment, in synergy with sister security agencies, to safeguarding lives and property in all parts of the state, urging residents to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by providing credible information.
