The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has alerted travellers to possible delays at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos following a protest by visually impaired persons.
FAAN, in a notice on Monday, said traffic around the airport became gridlocked after members of the Farmcraft Centre for the Blind blocked access roads.
It explained that the demonstration, which began earlier in the day, disrupted vehicular movement on major approach routes to the airport.
To ease travel difficulties, the authority advised passengers to monitor traffic updates before heading out and verify flight schedules with their airlines.
FAAN also urged travellers to consider alternative routes to avoid the worst of the congestion.
In its statement, the agency apologised for the disruption, thanking travellers for their patience and advising them to stay informed for safe movement.
The protest forced some air passengers to walk long distances to catch their flights as vehicles were trapped in the gridlock.
Leaders of the demonstration accused the government of abandoning their school, which they said had been shut for more than two years.
They claimed repeated pleas for intervention had been ignored, leaving many visually impaired persons without education.
The group’s spokesperson said the closure had pushed some of its members into street begging to survive.
By about 11am, the protest had effectively sealed off key entry points to the domestic wing of the airport.
