JUST IN: Court frees Ibom Air passenger after criminal charges withdrawn

An Ikeja Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos State, on Wednesday discharged Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger accused of unruly behaviour and assault.

Magistrate Olanrewaju Salami struck out the case after the police withdrew the five-count charge against her.

Earlier, the minister of aviation and aerospace development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), announced the decision after consultations with aviation stakeholders.

According to the minister, the resolutions followed a review of the incident, appeals from well-meaning Nigerians, and the remorse shown by those involved.

Keyamo disclosed that Ibom Air had agreed to withdraw its complaint over the August 10 incident that led to Emmanson’s arrest.

Emmanson was arraigned on Monday and granted bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, but she was remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for failing to meet the conditions.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecution, Oluwabunmi Adeitan, told the court that new developments warranted the withdrawal of the case.

She tendered an application for withdrawal, which the court granted without objection.
