Diesel supply rose by 1.73%, but distribution fell 23.23%; petrol supply dropped nearly 48% showing significant sector distribution challenges
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported a sharp drop in fuel consumption for June, with total evacuation falling to 1.44 billion litres.
According to George Ene-Ita, NMDPRA’s Director of Public Affairs, daily consumption averaged 48 million litres. The total figure of 1,440,768,129 litres represented an 18.54% decline from May’s 1,768,812,804 litres, a drop of over 328 million litres.
Automobile Gas Oil (diesel) recorded a 1.73% increase in supply, rising to 432.18 million litres from May’s 424.83 million litres. However, diesel distribution (truck-out) fell by 23.23%, from 552.35 million litres in May to 424.06 million litres in June.
Household kerosene supply and distribution both decreased by 13%, dropping to 7.79 million litres from nearly 9 million litres in May.
The steepest decline was in petrol supply, which plunged almost 48% from 72.36 million litres in May to 37.66 million litres in June. Petrol distribution also fell by 16.54% over the same period.
Lagos received the highest fuel truck-out volume at 205.66 million litres, followed by Ogun (88.69 million litres), the FCT (77.51 million litres), and Oyo (72.81 million litres).
Ene-Ita said the NMDPRA will continue working with stakeholders to strengthen distribution and ensure uninterrupted petroleum product supply nationwide.
