Yabatech loses staff to COVID-19, shuts medical centre, academic planning unit

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Lagos has closed down its medical centre and academic planning unit following the death of a staff of the institution, Mr M.A.Omoighe.

Omoighe was reportedly died from COVID-19 complications and until his death was a staff of the Academic Planning Unit of the institution.

The two facilities were shut by the management after careful review of Omoighe’s death on Monday as a way to curtail the spread of the virus among staff and students of the college, their relations and other members of the public.

In a statement issued by the Acting Registrar of YABATECH, Dr S.O Momodu, to all staff and students concerning the death and the consequent decisions taken, the school said both the Academic Planning Unit and the medical centre would remain shut for one week from Monday, January 25 while general decontamination exercise would be carried out on the college.

The school asked all staff who had contact with the late Omoighe and family members to go on self-isolation and later come forward for COVID-19 test while anyone also in the college community with symptoms of COVID-19 to also contact without delay the acting Director of medical services of the college through some given phone lines.

YABATECH directed each office to rotate their staff to accommodate only 50 per cent members at a time and that all meeting with more than 10 attendees should be done online.

Furthermore, the school said it remains mandatory for every member of staff and student to wear their nose mask, observe social/physical distancing and other non-pharmaceutical protocols already given by the government.
