Racism continues to cast a shadow over global football, affecting players at every level and prompting calls for urgent reform.

High-profile athletes repeatedly face racial abuse both on the field and online, underscoring the persistence of discriminatory behaviour in the sport.

Vinícius Júnior

Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior has been among the most prominent targets of racial abuse in recent years.

During a UEFA Champions League playoff against Benfica, he accused Gianluca Prestianni of directing a racist slur at him after scoring, which led to the match being halted under FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, although Prestianni denied the allegation.

Vinícius has also been subjected to repeated racist chants from fans in Spain, with some cases resulting in suspended prison sentences after incidents in 2022 and beyond.

Bukayo Saka

England international Bukayo Saka endured a wave of racist abuse on social media after missing a penalty in the UEFA Euro 2020 final.

The barrage of hateful messages, including racial slurs, prompted arrests and condemnation from football authorities, politicians, and the public, highlighting how online platforms can amplify racial attacks.

Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford faced a similar surge of racially motivated insults following England’s defeat in the Euro 2020 penalty shootout.

Derogatory and racially charged comments circulated online, prompting the English Football Association and national leaders to call for stronger measures against racism in football.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho, another England squad member at Euro 2020, was also subjected to online racial abuse after the final.

Football officials and anti-discrimination campaigns condemned the offensive messages, emphasising the vulnerability of players to attacks purely for representing their country.

Joe Willock

Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock was recently targeted with racist threats on Instagram after a Premier League victory.

The abuse included offensive language and violent threats directed at him and his family, prompting Newcastle United to call for intervention from law enforcement and social media companies.

Mike Maignan

French goalkeeper Mike Maignan of AC Milan spoke publicly after experiencing racist abuse from fans during an Italian league match.

Maignan stressed that symbolic gestures alone are insufficient and urged football authorities and supporters to implement stronger actions against racially motivated behaviour.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Kalidou Koulibaly faced racist chants from Lazio supporters while playing for Napoli in Serie A, resulting in sanctions against the club.

The defender described the incident as a stark example of persistent racism in football, sparking debates on how governing bodies enforce anti-discrimination rules.

Glen Kamara

While representing Rangers, Glen Kamara endured racial taunts from an opponent during a Europa League match.

The case led to an official investigation and disciplinary action, highlighting the significance of solidarity across clubs in combating racism.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has experienced multiple instances of racially insensitive remarks during his career.

Notably, a former Norwich City sporting director made stereotypical comments about Black players, which Sterling and colleagues publicly condemned, reinforcing calls for equality and respect in football.

Mario Balotelli

Former Italy international Mario Balotelli recently revealed that he was racially abused while playing in the United Arab Emirates.

The taunts referenced racist stereotypes, and Balotelli used social media to condemn the abuse, emphasising that racism has no place in football or society and urging greater awareness to prevent similar incidents.

Racism remains a pervasive challenge in football, demonstrating the need for continued vigilance, robust enforcement of anti-discrimination policies, and education to ensure players are protected and the sport remains inclusive.
