FACT CHECK: Is Popular CAC Gospel Singer, Mama Fasoyin Dead?

A claim circulated on social media, particularly Facebook, and subsequently published on some blogs, asserted that Deborah Fasoyin, an 86-year-old renowned gospel singer from the Christ Apostolic Church, has passed away.


CLAIM

When WITHIN NIGERIA examined the claim, it discovered that the news of the said passing of 86-year-old famed CAC gospel singer Mama Fasoyin first surfaced on the internet on Monday morning, March 16, 2026.

A verified Facebook page called ‘Honest Tv Media Promotion’ announced the said passing with the message “So sad: Mama Fasoyin as passes on, the woman who sang Odun nlo sopin. RIP to her 💔💔💔💔💔💔” with a picture of the 86-year-old gospel singer.

 

The Facebook post attracted 1,600 reactions (likes, sad and shock), 1200 comments and 54 shares. As at the time of filing this report, the post has not been deleted.

A further check also revealed that another Facebook group identified as John Legend fan club under the administration of Olaleye Matthew Dare also posted an AI generated report about the said passing titled ‘Nigerian singer passes away leaving legacy’.

VERIFICATION

Deborah Fasoyin, a well-known Christ Apostolic Church gospel singer also known as Mama Fasoyin and best known for her classic song Odun N Lo Sopin, has denied viral rumors of her death.

In a video produced to address the speculation, the renowned gospel performer informed fans and well-wishers that she is still alive and well.

Mama Fasoyin spoke calmly in the video, expressing surprise at the false claims and thanking God for protecting her life.

She also appreciated those who reached out to verify the information and urged the public to avoid spreading unconfirmed news.

VERDICT

The claim that Deborah Fasoyin, a well-known Christ Apostolic Church gospel singer, has died is false, misleading and untrue.
