Here are 10 moments that captured the love, grief and legacy of Alexx Ekubo.

In keeping with the family’s request, mourners set aside the traditional black associated with grief and instead filled the venue in all-white attire. The choice transformed the atmosphere from one of sombre mourning to one of reflection and celebration.

From Nollywood stars and media personalities to family members and close friends, virtually everyone in attendance embraced the dress code, creating a striking visual display that immediately set the tone for the evening.

Against the backdrop of floral arrangements, soft lighting and giant screens displaying photographs from different stages of Alexx’s life and career, the white garments seemed to carry a message of their own—one of peace, transition and hope.

Rather than dwelling solely on the pain of loss, the symbolism seemed to encouraged guests to celebrate a life that had touched countless people.

2. A Sister-in-Law’s Tribute to an “Intentional Lover”

One of the evening’s most intimate moments came when Alexx’s sister-in-law stepped forward to share a glimpse into the man known only to family.

While much of the public knew Alexx as a charismatic actor and model, she spoke about the husband and partner whose greatest role unfolded away from the cameras.

Describing him as an “intentional lover,” she painted a portrait of a man who was deliberate about the people he cared for and the relationships he nurtured.

Most notably, she reflected on his devotion to his widow, Anwuli, describing him as the perfect partner whose love and commitment remained evident even during life’s most challenging moments. In her words:

“My dear sister Anwili, we knew the journey wouldn’t be easy, as we were quite selective about who she would be with, given her uniqueness. But when Ikenna entered the picture, we instantly felt he was the right match. His genuine love and intentional nature assured us that Anwili would be safe and cherished with him. If anyone believed they understood love, they needed to see Ikenna and Anwili together. His affection was not just for Anwili but extended to our entire family, making us feel secure in entrusting our precious one to him. For Ikenna, family transcended blood ties. His love meant you were family, in the truest sense. Though his time with us may have seemed brief, it was full of purpose. Ikenna gave everything of himself, returning to his creator with nothing left to give. His deep love for Jesus and God brings us peace. He came, he experienced, and he fulfilled his mission beautifully.”

3. Anwuli’s Quiet Strength Amid Heartbreak

One of the most emotional sights at Alexx Ekubo’s Service of Songs was the presence of his wife, Anwuli.

Dressed in white, with a white headgear, white face mask and dark shades, she sat quietly alongside Alexx’s younger sister and other family members as tributes poured in for the late actor.

Though she did not speak or deliver a tribute, her grief was evident. At different moments during the service, she could be seen crying softly while being supported by two people holding her hand or tapping her arm gently.

4. Ebuka Songs Reflects on Alexx’s Private Faith Journey

Another revealing moment came when gospel singer Ebuka Songs took the stage and shared a deeply personal memory.

He recalled an intimate worship session he once shared with Alexx and actor IK Ogbonna, a moment that revealed a side of the late actor rarely seen by the public.

Ebuka admitted that some people had questioned his association with Alexx at the time, wondering why a gospel minister would spend time with someone they did not consider a believer. But he chose to ignore the criticism.

Looking back, he expressed gratitude for that decision, noting that Alexx possessed a genuine spiritual hunger long before illness entered the picture.

5. IK Ogbonna’s Emotional Farewell to His Best Friend

IK Ogbonna

If the early tributes celebrated Alexx’s life, IK Ogbonna’s appearance on stage brought the reality of his absence into sharp focus.

As one of Alexx’s closest friends, the actor approached the stage and removed his glasses before speaking. Then came a remark that instantly pierced through the room. With tears threatening to overwhelm him, IK joked that Alexx would have mocked him for wearing “stupid glasses” on stage.

The audience laughed, but it was the kind of laughter born from heartbreak. The comment offered a glimpse into the private humour that defined their friendship while underscoring the painful reality that the friend who would normally have made the joke was no longer there.

It was one of the evening’s most emotional tributes as IK went on to read sweet memories he shared with Alexx from his notebook.

6. Nancy Isime’s Toughest Assignment Yet

Nancy Isime

For years, Nancy Isime has hosted some of Nigeria’s biggest events with confidence and ease. But at the end of the service, she admitted she faced the most difficult hosting assignment of her career.

Tasked with anchoring the programme, Nancy openly acknowledged the emotional burden of guiding a service dedicated to someone she knew and cared about.

7. The Remarkable Gathering Alexx Brought Together

Also present were actors and filmmakers such as IK Ogbonna, Stan Nze, Kunle Remi, Frederick Leonard and Mike Godson, many of whom shared personal memories of the late actor.

Beyond Nollywood, the event attracted prominent religious leaders including Pastor Ituah Ighodaloand Pastor Jerry Eze, while gospel ministers Moses Bliss, Mercy Chinwo, Ebuka Songs, Peterson Okopi and The Laud Urban Choir led worship sessions throughout the evening.

The gathering also featured public figures and personalities from different sectors, including former Minister of Education Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, musician Chike Osebuka, socialites Cubana Chief Priest and E-Money, singer Kcee, comedian AY Makun, fashion entrepreneur Yomi Casual and television host Frank Edoho.

Their presence underscored a recurring theme throughout the night: Alexx Ekubo’s relationships extended far beyond movie sets and red carpets. In life, he built connections across entertainment, business, media, ministry and public service. In death, those different worlds came together under one roof to celebrate him.

8. The Story Behind Alexx’s Final Smile

Among the many stories shared during the evening, few resonated as deeply as the account of Alexx’s final moments.

Nancy Isime revealed what those present at the hospital had shared with her, that Alexx passed away with a smile on his face.

After a battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer, the image of Alexx leaving the world with a smile felt profoundly symbolic.

For a man whose career was built on bringing joy to others, it became a final image of peace, resilience and grace.

By the end of the evening, it was clear that Alexx Ekubo’s Service of Songs had become much more than a funeral event. It was a reflection of a life marked by love, friendship, faith and impact.
