On September 24, 2021, no fewer than thirty Nigerian soldiers were killed when Boko Haram insurgents attacked a military base in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to security sources, the insurgents, who came in large numbers aboard gun trucks, overran the base very early, engaging troops in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours.
The attack, which occurred in Marte — a border town in northern Borno — left the base destroyed, with military hardware reportedly carted away by the assailants.
A top security source confirmed that casualties were recorded on the side of the troops.
Marte has remained one of the hotspots of insurgency in the Lake Chad region, with repeated attacks on military and civilian targets in recent months.
