The Chief Justice, who was to retire on October 18, had served the judiciary of the Northern Region since 1958. He was appointed following the region’s attainment of self-government. A distinguished barrister, he was knighted in the 1956 Birthday Honours for services to the law.

The Attorney-General of the Northern Region, Mr. Ahmadu Coomassie, expressed deep regret.

“Sir Algernon was a man of honour and learning. His death is a great loss to the administration of justice in the North”, he added.
