Barcelona recover in Istanbul to go top
Barcelona went a goal down in Istanbul and left with a 4-1 win that put them first in the Champions League table. Aleksei Batrakov gave Galatasaray the lead on 28 minutes with a deflected effort that came against the run of play. João Cancelo levelled shortly before half-time with a neat finish.
The match turned in about three minutes after the break. Lamine Yamal crossed for Fermín López to head Barcelona in front on 50 minutes, then set up Anthony Gordon to score from close range on 53. Substitute Karim Adeyemi added a fourth with a crisp strike on 65, and Yamal took the player of the match award.
Hansi Flick’s side have scored nine goals in two games, having beaten Feyenoord 5-1 on Matchday 1, and their +7 goal difference is the best in the competition. Galatasaray, beaten 3-1 by Sporting CP in their opener, have conceded seven and sit 34th without a point. Barcelona’s next game is a hard one: Paris Saint-Germain away on Tuesday 20 October.
Arsenal break Lille with three goals in seven minutes
Lille defended well for an hour at the Emirates. Arsenal’s best chance of the first half fell to Bruno Guimarães, but goalkeeper Berke Özer parried his shot and then reacted quickly to claw the rebound away from Viktor Gyökeres.
The breakthrough came on 64 minutes, when Jurriën Timber turned and chipped the ball in from a tight angle. Arsenal then sent on Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz in a triple change, and Saka made an immediate mark, crossing for Eberechi Eze to score on 67. He added a goal of his own on 71, sliding in a pass from Havertz. Timber was named player of the match.
The numbers show how one-sided it became. Arsenal had 16 shots, eight of them on target, while Lille managed four shots and none tested the goalkeeper. It was Arsenal’s 14th straight league-phase win in the Champions League, a run that began after a 1-0 defeat at Inter in November 2024, and they are the only side to have played twice without conceding.
The opener at Napoli was tighter on the scoreboard than in the stats. Ødegaard scored the only goal 15 minutes from time, but Arsenal created 4.05 expected goals, their highest total in any Champions League match. Lille, coached by Davide Ancelotti, lost their opener 3-2 to Real Betis after going down to ten men, and they now sit 32nd with no points. Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich on Wednesday 21 October.
Suárez makes history as Sporting CP win at Lens
Luis Suárez scored a clever finish for his seventh Champions League goal, which makes him Sporting CP’s outright all-time top scorer in the modern competition, as Sporting won 2-0 at Lens. It was his eighth goal in all competitions this season, and he has now scored in seven games in a row.
Lens pushed back. Robin Risser turned a Suárez shot round the post, Franjo Ivanović hit the woodwork from distance, and Kaique Pereira had to tip Amadou Haidara’s long-range effort over the bar. Issa Doumbia then settled it, slotting in from a superb through ball by Silas Andersen.
Sporting have scored five and conceded one in two games, having beaten Galatasaray 3-1 on Matchday 1. Lens won 3-2 at Slavia Praha in their opener, but the club has been through upheaval since: Dino Toppmöller was dismissed on 15 September, and Yannick Cahuzac took the job permanently two days later. Sporting host LASK on Wednesday 21 October.
Bayern held, Inter beaten and United out-fought
The leaders were not the only story on Tuesday. Four results changed the shape of the middle and bottom of the Champions League table.
Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich
Gianni Stensness headed Viking in front from a corner inside two minutes, and Peter Christiansen doubled the lead on a first-half counterattack. Harry Kane pulled one back from the penalty spot and levelled with a header after the break, stretching his Champions League scoring run to nine games. Luis Díaz then finished a slick move to put Bayern 3-2 up, but Michael Olise was sent off, and Herman Haugen’s late header gave Viking their first point in the competition. Bayern are fourth on four points.
Inter 3-4 Club Brugge
Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick at the San Siro. He opened with a penalty, added a second after a fortunate bounce on a quick counter, and completed the treble with a close-range finish. Lautaro Martínez scored twice for Inter, and Romeo Vermant got Brugge’s fourth before Ange-Yoan Bonny’s late goal made for a nervous finish. Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid on Matchday 1, so they have no points from two games. Brugge, who lost 3-2 at Aston Villa in their opener, are on three.
Atlético Madrid 2-0 Manchester United
Pablo Barrios scored inside a minute, his effort squirming in under Ayden Heaven. Alejandro Grimaldo and Julián Álvarez both hit the post, and Bruno Fernandes had a curler that clipped the bar at the other end. After Leny Yoro was sent off, substitute Ademola Lookman tapped in to seal it. Álex Baena was player of the match. It was Atlético’s first win after a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool, and United, 4-0 winners over Sabah in their opener, drop to seventh.
Sabah, Villarreal and Leipzig
Debutants Sabah won their first Champions League match, beating Slavia Praha 2-0 in Baku. Kaheem Parris scored on 49 minutes with a first-time curler, and Joy-Lance Mickels sealed it late on a counter. Villarreal ended a run of 12 Champions League games without a win by beating Napoli 3-1: Amir Rrahmani put Napoli ahead after eight minutes, then Georges Mikautadze and Santiago Mouriño scored within four minutes of each other, and Tani Oluwaseyi added the third late on. In Leipzig, Brajan Gruda’s first Champions League goal, a 75th-minute drive from the edge of the box, beat PSV after Maarten Vandevoordt had saved Ivan Perišić’s penalty on 19 minutes.
