Tope Alabi’s Legal Warning: What Triggered the Notice?

Tope Alabi’s lawyers issued a public notice warning against allegedly false and defamatory statements.

Sometimes, a public figure can remain silent through several rounds of criticism, questions and online conversations. But there are moments when silence gives way to something more formal.

For Tope Alabi, that moment came on Friday, October 23, 2026, when a legal notice bearing her name was made public.

The message was firm. It warned against publications concerning the gospel singer and listed possible legal consequences for those who create, repeat or amplify statements her lawyers consider false and defamatory. But what brought things to this point?

The Notice That Drew Attention

Tope Alabi

On October 23, Alabi’s solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, issued a public notice on her behalf. The document identified the singer as Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi and described her as a gospel minister, recording artist, songwriter, actress and public figure.

Her lawyers said she had spent almost 30 years building a reputation in her personal, professional and spiritual life and described that reputation as an asset protected by law.

The notice then addressed what appeared to be the immediate concern which were statements the lawyers said were false, misleading and injurious to their client. It warned that anyone who publishes such statements, whether through written material, videos, images, audio, social media posts, broadcasts, podcasts, live streams or spoken words, could be held liable.

The warning did not stop with the original person making a claim. The lawyers also mentioned people who “repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies” allegedly defamatory material.

What Happened Before The Legal Warning?

The notice did not name a particular person or publication in the body of the document. However, the legal warning came after a fresh wave of social media claims involving Tope Alabi and the death of gospel singer Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, popularly known as Toluwanisings.

Toluwanisings died in the early hours of October 14, 2026, at the age of 41. His family confirmed the death in a statement shared on his verified social media pages, describing him as a beloved husband, family member and gospel minister. The family did not disclose his cause of death and asked the public to pray for his wife, family and loved ones.

His death came shortly after he had ministered at a worship programme in Ibadan. Reports also emerged about the circumstances surrounding his final hours. His personal assistant, Babadunni Olayemi, later said the singer had been taken to several hospitals after suddenly collapsing. He added that efforts were made to secure medical attention at between seven and eight hospitals.

Pastor Tayo’s Posts

Pastor Tayo

On October 22 and 23, videos and posts attributed to Pastor Tayo Ministries appeared on Facebook. In the posts, Pastor Tayo made serious allegations against Alabi and other gospel personalities, including Woli Agba, Dele Omo Woli and Woli Arole.

The posts alleged that the entertainers had a connection to Toluwanisings’ death and accused Alabi of being responsible for the deaths of other ministers. She urged them to deny it publicly if her allegations were false.

One of the posts described Alabi in deeply damaging terms and alleged that she and others were involved in ritual activities connected to the deaths of gospel ministers.

Another post directly linked Alabi, Woli Agba, Dele Omo Woli and Woli Arole to Toluwanisings’ death. These claims were presented by Pastor Tayo as a spiritual revelation and she also made videos asides the posts.

Alabi Mourned Toluwanisings

The claims come after Tope Alabi publicly mourned Toluwanisings after his death. In a tribute published on social media on October 15, she described his death as a “big shock.” She wrote:

“I still can’t wrap my head around this. It hurts, but I will not sorrow as those who have no hope.”

She added that she found comfort in believing that “a saint has joined the angels” and prayed for God to comfort and strengthen his family, friends and colleagues.

Less than two weeks later, the conversation around the singer’s death had moved from mourning to accusations involving some of the biggest names in Nigerian gospel entertainment. And that was the environment in which Alabi’s lawyers issued their notice.

What Exactly Are Alabi’s Lawyers Warning Against?

The October 23 notice was wider than a warning aimed at one Facebook page. The lawyers stated that anyone who publishes false or malicious statements about their client could face legal action.

They also warned people who might share or repost such material. According to the notice, Alabi’s lawyers have been instructed to institute proceedings against anyone whose conduct gives rise to an actionable claim “without further notice or recourse.”

The remedies listed include general damages and, where legally available, aggravated or exemplary damages. The lawyers also listed injunctions to stop further publication, orders requiring a retraction and an unreserved public apology, as well as legal costs.

For people hiding behind anonymous or pseudonymous accounts, there was another warning. The notice stated that anonymity does not automatically provide immunity from legal liability. Where necessary and legally permissible, Alabi’s lawyers said they could seek court orders to identify those responsible through platforms, hosts or service providers.

The notice also told people who had already published allegedly defamatory material to remove it immediately. But removal, the lawyers warned, would not automatically erase liability for material that had already been published.

It Was Not Only A Warning Against Criticism

There is an important qualification at the end of the legal notice. Alabi’s lawyers specifically stated that the notice was not intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression.

The document was not framed as a demand that nobody should criticise Alabi. Rather, it drew a legal line around what her lawyers described as false, malicious or reputation-damaging claims. The legal notice makes clear that Alabi’s camp intends to challenge what it considers to have crossed that line. See screenshot of the notice below:

A New Line For Tope Alabi?

Tope Alabi has spent decades in the public eye, and controversy is not new to public figures of her stature, but the October 23 notice marks a clear change in tone.

Rather than responding to the latest claims with another social media post or public explanation, Alabi’s response came through her lawyers.

For now, no court judgment has established the allegations against Alabi or the other gospel personalities named in the online posts. What is clear is that the conversation has moved beyond social media.

The next chapter, if legal proceedings are eventually filed, may determine whether the claims remain an online controversy or become a matter for the courts.
