Barcelona vs Real Madrid kicks off tonight at the Spotify Camp Nou, and the league table has already set the terms. Hansi Flick’s side have won all nine of their La Liga games this season, Real Madrid are six points behind, and a home win would stretch that gap to nine. A Madrid win would cut it to three and give a title race that has so far belonged to Barcelona a second chapter.
A lot is happening around the match. José Mourinho, 63, is taking charge of his first Clásico since returning to Real Madrid this summer. Vinícius Júnior is suspended. Barcelona are coming off their first defeat of the season, a 4-2 loss at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. And on Monday, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal will both be waiting to hear whether they have been named the best player in the world at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Here is what you need before kick-off, followed by the four matchups most likely to settle the game.

Spain’s clocks went back an hour early this morning, which is why 9:00 pm in Barcelona is also 9:00 pm in Nigeria. Broadcasters differ by country, so check your local listings before the evening.
The stadium itself is still a building site. Capacity is a little over 60,000 while work continues, and the club expects it to reach 105,000 by the 2027/28 season.
How Barcelona and Real Madrid arrive
Barcelona have been ruthless in the league. They have scored 39 goals in nine games, at least two in every match, and 15 of those came in their last three home outings. They are only the second side in Spain’s top flight to win their first nine league games, after Real Madrid in 1968/69, and no team has ever opened a campaign with ten.
Paris was a reality check. PSG scored four, and Flick did not dress it up afterwards. “We made too many mistakes, especially in ball possession,” he said, adding that his players looked tired after a heavy run of fixtures. Raphinha, who leads the league with 12 goals, said the unbeaten domestic run was something the squad wanted to protect. Mbappé has nine league goals and Yamal has eight.
Real Madrid’s season started more shakily. They have lost twice in the league, both away, at Real Betis and in the derby at Atlético Madrid. Since the international break, though, they have won four in a row: 1-0 against Villarreal, a 4-3 comeback against Roma, then back-to-back 4-1 wins over Sevilla and RB Leipzig at the Bernabéu. Mourinho said this week that after more than a hundred days in charge, the team is still not where he wants it.
| Team | Played | Won | Lost | Points | Recent results |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | 9 | 9 | 0 | 27 | Beat Getafe 3-0, beat Real Betis 5-2, lost 4-2 at PSG (Champions League) |

Team news and likely line-ups
| Barcelona | Real Madrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Out | Eric García, Andreas Christensen, Dani Olmo, Roony Bardghji | Vinícius Júnior (suspended), Rodrygo, Raúl Asencio, Ferland Mendy |
| Doubt | Jules Koundé | None reported |
| Back in contention | Raphinha, Rodri, Fermín López | Ibrahima Konaté, Marc Cucurella, Aurélien Tchouaméni |
Vinícius was sent off against Villarreal for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair. The federation’s disciplinary committee gave him four matches, two for violent conduct and two more for his reaction to the red card. He has said he has never been violent toward another player, and his appeal did not change the outcome.
On the Barcelona side, Rodri began on the bench in Paris, which LiveScore reads as a sign that Flick had this game in mind. Xavi Espart, who scored against PSG, is expected to continue at right-back.
LiveScore’s predicted line-ups, which are not confirmed:
- Barcelona: García; Espart, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; Rodri, Fermín, Pedri; Yamal, Gordon, Raphinha
- Real Madrid: Courtois; Valverde, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Tchouaméni, Silva, Bellingham; Güler, Diomandé, Mbappé
Four battles that could decide the Clásico
1. Barcelona’s high line against Madrid’s counter-attack
Every opponent now asks the same question of Flick’s team: what happens when the ball is lost near the halfway line? The high defensive line has been part of the Flick era since he arrived, and it has been exposed again. PSG showed that Barcelona are easier to beat by attacking them than by sitting back.
The back four will also look different from the one that started the season. García and Christensen are out and Koundé is a doubt, so the line may be Espart, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and João Cancelo.
On the other side, Madrid have the runners to hurt that. Mbappé is in form, Güler is creative, and Yan Diomandé, the club’s record €140 million signing, has three goals and three assists in his last four games. AFP notes that he gives Madrid more defensively than Vinícius has this season, which makes him a likely choice to start in the Brazilian’s place.
2. The midfield tug of war
Barcelona’s midfield is expected to be Rodri, Fermín López and Pedri, with Rodri and Fermín both back after being managed carefully in Paris. Madrid have more options than they know what to do with. Tchouaméni, Bernardo Silva and Jude Bellingham are the predicted trio, with Güler another candidate.
Mourinho’s recent decision to move Federico Valverde to right-back opened up a midfield place. He used Güler there against Sevilla and Silva against Leipzig, and Madrid kept the ball better in both games. A Clásico is a different test, though. In his first spell, Mourinho once played the defender Pepe in midfield against Barcelona, and AFP’s preview suggests he could again add an extra body to disrupt the hosts’ rhythm. On paper, CBS Sports gives Madrid the edge in this area.
3. Barcelona’s front line against a reshuffled Madrid defence
Barcelona average more than four goals a game. Raphinha is fit again and expected to lead the line, and Yamal is looking for a fourth Clásico goal after scoring three in the fixture so far. Anthony Gordon is in the predicted attack alongside them.
Madrid’s back line has been rearranged. Valverde has started at right-back in the last two games ahead of Denzel Dumfries and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mourinho praised his display against Leipzig. Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Cucurella are the likely names around him. If the hosts get Yamal isolated against Cucurella, or find Raphinha running at Valverde in an unfamiliar role, Madrid could be in trouble.
4. Flick against Mourinho
Flick has won two league titles in two seasons, and since he took over, Barcelona have won six of seven Clásicos, scoring 22 goals and conceding 11.
Mourinho knows this fixture better than anyone in the building. He won the 2012 league title with Madrid during a spell (2010 to 2013) when relations between the clubs hit their lowest point, including the August 2011 incident in which he poked Barcelona assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye. This season he has already brought printouts to a press conference to argue that Atlético deserved two red cards, and he skipped the news conference after Vinícius was sent off. Some observers read that as a deliberate attempt to take pressure off his players.
Mourinho also complained this week that Madrid had 24 hours less rest than Barcelona after their Champions League game. Spanish daily AS reported that inside the club, Vinícius’s ban was seen as more of a solution than a problem.
On paper, position by position
| Area | Edge | Why (CBS Sports) |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Real Madrid | Thibaut Courtois has more experience and consistency than Joan García |
| Defence | Barcelona | Younger defenders such as Cubarsí and Espart are in better form |
| Midfield | Real Madrid | Bellingham, Valverde, Güler, Tchouaméni and Silva give Mourinho depth |
| Attack | Barcelona | Vinícius’s absence tips a close call |
| Coach | Barcelona | Flick has two league titles in two seasons |

Real Madrid still lead the all-time league series, but Barcelona took two of the three meetings last season.
| Date | Competition | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 26 October 2025 | La Liga | Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona |
| January 2026 | Spanish Super Cup final | Barcelona won, in a high-scoring game with a stoppage-time sending-off |
| 10 May 2026 | La Liga | Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid |
The May result at Camp Nou, a Marcus Rashford free kick and a Ferran Torres goal inside 18 minutes, sealed the league title with three games to spare and a 14-point lead. Madrid have lost their last two league visits to Catalonia, and defeat tonight would make it three in a row, something that has not happened since the 5-0 loss in 2010.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid prediction
The numbers lean toward the hosts. LiveScore’s preview forecasts a 3-1 Barcelona win, and bookmakers have the Catalans as clear favourites. But Madrid are no longer the team that lost at Betis and Atlético. They have scored 12 goals in their last three games, and Mourinho knows how to set a team up to disrupt Barcelona.
Barcelona’s weakness is the one every analyst has pointed out. If they lose the ball cheaply in midfield, Mbappé and Diomandé are exactly the players who will punish it. If they don’t, it is hard to see how Madrid keep pace with a side averaging more than four goals a game.
The return fixture is at the Bernabéu on 9 May 2027, matchday 35. By then, tonight’s result will either look like the moment Barcelona ran away with a third straight title or the night Mourinho’s team started to catch them.
