Tacha Wants BBNaija to Take a Break: What Has Changed?

Sometimes, the biggest question facing a successful brand is not how to grow bigger, but how to remain interesting when people have become familiar with what it offers. Keeping an audience entertained can be just as challenging as winning its attention in the first place.

For a programme that has turned ordinary Nigerians into household names and made conversations out of friendships, rivalries and relationships, the challenge is even greater. And as entertainment habits continue to change, questions about what comes next are becoming harder to ignore.

Tacha’s latest advice to BBNaija organisers

Tacha

On October 23, 2026, reality TV star Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, shared her thoughts on the future of Big Brother Naija during an appearance on Arise News.

Asked whether the reality show had served its purpose, or whether its organisers should consider taking a break or ending it, Tacha made her position clear. She said:

“I think they need to take a break, re-strategise and just come up with something because we are really at an era where everything happens on social media.”

Her suggestion was not that BBNaija should disappear permanently. Rather, she believes a pause could give its organisers time to rethink the programme and return with ideas capable of attracting viewers in a changing entertainment landscape.

Tacha also argued that the environment in which the show first became popular was different from what it is today. In her words:

“At the time when the show was really hitting and now it’s different, like social media wasn’t what it was then.”

Her comments came shortly after the conclusion of the show’s 11th season, which ended on October 4, 2026, with Temi Nkem emerging as the winner.

For Tacha, the question is whether the familiar reality TV formula can continue to hold people’s attention when so much entertainment is already available at their fingertips.

BBNaija has taken a break before: What happened?

To understand Tacha’s suggestion, it is worth looking back at the show’s history. Big Brother Nigeria first aired in 2006, with Katung Aduwak emerging as the winner. However, the Nigerian edition did not return the following year, leaving a long gap before the franchise came back to local screens.

On November 9, 2016, John Ugbe, then managing director of MultiChoice Nigeria, announced that Big Brother Naija would return in January 2017. He said that the decision followed popular demand from people who wanted the show back. The programme returned in 2017, with housemates including Efe Ejeba, Bisola Aiyeola and Tboss competing for the grand prize. Efe eventually won the season.

The return proved to be an important moment for the franchise, which went on to produce more seasons and introduce new personalities to Nigerian entertainment.

The gap between the 2006 edition and the 2017 return lasted roughly 11 years. It was not simply the usual break between seasons.

Why Tacha believes BBNaija needs another break

At the centre of Tacha’s argument is the changing role of social media in everyday entertainment. During her Arise TV appearance, she pointed to online conversations and celebrity controversies that can attract public attention without requiring people to follow a scheduled television programme.

Using the family dispute involving music duo P-Square as an example, she questioned why viewers should focus on housemates inside the BBNaija house when social media is already providing stories that people want to follow. In her words:

“You don’t want us watching housemates in the house, meanwhile P-Square is giving us part seven of his family issues.”

Her point was that online entertainment has become a serious competitor for people’s attention. A conversation can begin on social media, develop through videos and posts, and continue as new details emerge. This creates a different environment for a reality show that depends on viewers following events over several weeks.

Social media’s reach in Nigeria also provides useful context for her argument. DataReportal’s Digital 2026: Nigeria report estimated 47.8 million active social media user identities in October 2025. It recorded an increase of 12 million identities between late 2024 and late 2025.

These figures show the scale and growth of social media use, although they do not establish that BBNaija has lost viewers.

Tacha’s concern is that the show can no longer rely on the same entertainment environment that helped it gain attention in earlier years. With online creators, celebrity updates and personal stories competing for attention, the organisers may need to think more carefully about what makes the programme worth following.

Her suggestion is to take a step back, rethink the format and return with something that feels different.

Tacha’s comments carry an added layer of interest because she is not speaking as an outsider with no experience of the programme. She rose to prominence during the 2019 edition, tagged Pepper Dem. Her time in the house was marked by intense conversations, rivalries and moments that kept viewers talking.

However, her participation ended on September 27, 2019, when she was disqualified following a physical confrontation with fellow housemate Mercy Eke. The show’s organisers said Tacha had broken the rules against physical violence. Mercy received two strikes for her role in the incident.

Although her journey in the house ended before the finale, Tacha continued to build a public profile after leaving the programme. She became known for her strong social media presence and went on to pursue opportunities in entertainment, fashion and broadcasting.

Her experience offers her a perspective on the programme that many viewers do not have. She has experienced the attention that comes with being a housemate and the public conversations that can follow contestants long after they leave the house.

Recent seasons show that BBNaija is already changing

While Tacha is calling for a fresh approach, the show’s recent editions suggest that its organisers have continued to introduce changes.
The 10th season, tagged 10/10, launched on July 26 and 27, 2025, across two nights. It featured 29 housemates and ended on October 5, 2025, when Imisi emerged as the winner.

The following year, the 11th season, tagged Show Ya Sef, began on July 26, 2026, with 24 housemates and an advertised prize package worth ₦160 million.
After 10 weeks of competition, Temi Nkem was crowned the winner on October 4, 2026.

The finale also introduced a notable change. For the first time in the show’s history, three housemates: Temi, Aikou and Sheba, reached the final stage, rather than the customary final two.

These developments show that the programme has not remained completely unchanged. Its organisers have continued to experiment with casting, launch formats, gift items, games in the house and the structure of the competition.

However, Tacha’s argument raises a different question: are changes within individual seasons enough, or does the overall viewing experience need a more substantial rethink?

A break or a fresh beginning?

Tacha’s advice comes at a time when BBNaija has completed another season and is preparing for whatever comes next. Her comments have reopened a familiar question about the future of a programme that has become a major part of Nigerian popular culture.

The show’s history demonstrates that it can return after a long absence, but its future will depend on more than repeating what worked in the past.

Perhaps the real question is not simply whether BBNaija should take another break, but what it could offer Nigerians that would make them eager to watch when it returns.

After all, giving viewers time to miss a show may create anticipation. Giving them a genuinely new reason to watch could be what keeps them interested.
