‘Most hit songs in Nigeria are not good music’ – Singer Ric Hassani

Ric Hassani speaks on the decline of Afrobeats quality

Nigerian singer Ric Hassani sparks a debate by claiming that the majority of Nigeria’s current chart-toppers don’t meet his standards for good music.

In a recent appearance on Channels TV’s “Rubbin’ Minds” with Ebuka, Hassani lamented that the significant decline in the quality of Afrobeats over the years. He expressed his disappointment, stating:

Afrobeats is Nigerian music. Our guys are top 10 and I feel like because of that the quality of music might stop dropping because more people want to get in. So the quality is really dropping.”

Hassani recalled the past, when hit songs were synonymous with exceptional music. However, he believes the current landscape is vastly different, with anyone able to produce a hit, regardless of quality. He emphasized:

Back in the days, hit songs were serious music but now almost anybody is just coming in. Most of the hit songs in Nigeria now are not very good music. Back in the days it wasn’t like this. I feel like because we have been number one for so long, everybody is just dropping whatever they like and throwing money behind it.”

In another story, Sarz claims that his sound was the benchmark for other Afrobeats producers.

According to him, singer Wizkid was the first to recognize his sound and grasp his vision at an early stage.

Talking in a video message posted on his Instagram page, Sarz claimed that no one was producing that kind of music prior to him and Wizkid creating the sound “Samba.”

He said:

“I made a sound that became a benchmark for other Afrobeats producers to follow.

“I made a sound called ‘Samba.’ I remember no one was making anything like that at that time. I just wanted to do something that is African but at the same time the world in general understands. It was only Wizkid that saw the idea and knew exactly where I was coming from when I made Samba.”
