Nine persons reportedly lost their lives after a tipper, loaded with sand, collided with two buses conveying passengers in Benin City, Edo state.

It was gathered that the accident occurred early morning on Tuesday at Ogbelaka Junction, Sokponba Road, Benin City when the tipper involved in the accident was trying to overtake another tipper, but lost control and collided with the two minibuses, killing the commuters on the spot.

According to PUNCH, a source stated that the casualties would have been more if the Bureau de Change operators by Erie Junction did not run for safety when vehicles that were trying to avoid the scene tried to crush them.

While witnesses claimed to have counted nine corpses at the scene, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Bello Kontongs, said four persons died in the accident.

He said, “It involved a truck coming from Upper Sakponba that lost control and ran into a white bus, killing three people on the spot, while one died on the way to the hospital. The injured victims have been rushed to a hospital for treatment.”
