Don’t Attack Critics; Just Fix The Economy

The government must focus on concrete measures to alleviate hardship and stabilize the economy

Amidst nationwide protests and mounting economic challenges, the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have faced criticism for handling the country’s economic woes. Rather than dismissing critics and attributing unrest to external forces, the government must focus on concrete measures to alleviate hardship and stabilize the economy.

The recent wave of protests, according to APC spokesman Mr. Felix Morka, is viewed as a coordinated effort to disrupt governance. However, such assertions fail to address the underlying grievances of the populace. Similarly, the exchange between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s adviser, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reflects a tendency to deflect criticism rather than engage in constructive dialogue.

Vice President Kashim Shettima’s accusations of sabotage further underscore the need for introspection within the administration. Instead of resorting to blame games, the government must acknowledge the validity of concerns raised by citizens and stakeholders.

The urgent need for substantive economic reforms is at the heart of the matter. Policies such as removing fuel subsidies and currency devaluation have exacerbated inflation and eroded purchasing power. The government’s reliance on IMF prescriptions has failed to yield tangible results, necessitating a reassessment of economic strategies.

The floating of the naira has led to speculation-driven fluctuations, further destabilizing the economy. In the absence of a robust export-oriented approach, this approach is untenable and exacerbates the challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians.

Rather than adopting short-term palliative measures, the government must chart a course for sustainable economic recovery. This entails assembling a competent economic team and fostering inclusive dialogue with opposition figures. Collaboration, rather than confrontation, is crucial in navigating the complex economic landscape.

As the country teeters on the brink of an economic crisis, decisive action is imperative. The government must heed the clarion call for strategic reforms and prioritize the well-being of its citizens. Nigeria can only emerge stronger from its current economic predicament through concerted efforts and genuine dialogue.
