Following the success of the 2022 edition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has declared that Morocco will host the 2024 Women African Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The North African country hosted the just finished edition in July, with South Africa’s Bayana Bayana emerging victorious after defeating the host women’s team, also known as Atlas Lioness, 2-1 in the final.
According to Heritage Times, Morocco was awarded hosting rights when other African countries failed to submit bids, with the North Africans being the only ones to do so. As a result, they were appointed automatic hosts.
The continent’s football soccer body, though, has still to define the modalities for qualifying ahead of the biannual showcase in two years.
There is an indication that it could be played at the regional level, as it was for the 2022 edition.
This year’s edition has already provided four African qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and Nigeria are among them.
Despite losing in the 2022 WAFCON semi-finals, Nigeria’s Super Falcons remain the tournament’s most successful team, with nine record titles.
