On Friday, August 23, 1963, Nigerian Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa spoke by satellite telephone with U.S. President John F. Kennedy in what was the world’s first two-way satellite call between two heads of government.
The call which happened at exact 3:00p.m. Nigerian time, was relayed through NASA’s Syncom II satellite and linked Balewa aboard the USNS Kingsport in Lagos Harbour directly to the White House. The link was part of a formal ceremony to inaugurate commercial service using Syncom II, which the United States had launched on July 26.
The conversation lasted just over two minutes. Balewa and Kennedy exchanged pleasantries and spoke on bilateral relations. Balewa also referenced Nigeria’s recent sporting triumph: Dick Tiger’s victory over America’s Gene Fullmer to retain the world middleweight title.
President Kennedy called the link “a remarkable achievement in science” and praised Nigeria’s role in the demonstration. Balewa replied that the event showed Nigeria’s place among modern nations.
Officials present described the moment as symbolic of Nigeria’s ambition and its growing partnership with the United States. At a time when international calls were expensive and unreliable, the satellite connection positioned Nigeria as an early adopter of space technology.
The Ministry of Communications said Nigeria’s participation in the Syncom programme reflected both a pro-West foreign policy and a commitment to technological progress. Analysts noted the test could open the way for wider telecommunications across Africa, reducing dependence on undersea cables and improving diplomatic and trade links.
After the call, Balewa returned to Dodan Barracks where he briefed senior cabinet members.
