Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa has fulfilled his promise to deliver relief to Nembe towns lately impacted by an oil leak from an oilfield managed by Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Exploration.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Nov. 5 spill at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 lasted 32 days before being stopped on Dec. 9, compelling the governor to cut short his holiday overseas.
On Tuesday, residents of Nembe Bassamibiri and other communities affected by the oil spill received relief supplies worth millions of naira.
350 bags of rice, 200 bags of beans, 200 bags of garri, 100 bags of salt, 1000 cartons of noodles, 50 cartons of beverages, 50 cantons of 2 in 1 soap for bathing, and 50 cantons of sugar are among the products.
Mr Walaman Igrubia, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Emergency Management Agency, who handed over the items to Nembe-Basambri representatives, stated that the gesture was in response to a directive from the state governor.
He stated that the items provided were intended to alleviate the suffering of those whose livelihoods had been harmed by the spill.
Chieh West, Chairman of Nembe Local Government Area, who received the items, praised the governor for his love and compassion for the people of Nembe.
West promised that the things will be handed to the leaders of the kingdom’s many afflicted groups.
On behalf of the affected communities, His Royal Majesty, King Biobelemoye Josiah, Amayanabo of Opu-Nembe Kingdom, received relief materials.
Chief Ivory Fekoru, Secretary of the Opu-Nembe Council Chiefs, spoke on behalf of the Amanyanabo.
He thanked the governor for his gesture of kindness, stating that the materials will reach the people afflicted by the spill in all of their nooks and crannies.
According to NAN, Aiteo’s management has sent trucks of food, medical supplies, and cash donations to the affected communities on two separate occasions in the last month.
