Senator Ireti Heeba Kingibe, the representative for the FCT and the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, has called on Nigerians to join the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), emphasizing that this disturbing trend must come to an end.
Speaking during a ‘Walkathon in solidarity with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’ in Abuja on Saturday, Senator Kingibe expressed her optimism that the gender bills, which faced setbacks in the 9th National Assembly, would find more success in the 10th Assembly. She noted that legislators in the 10th Assembly are united in condemning all forms of violence in the country, especially GBV.
Senator Kingibe underscored the pivotal role women play in the country, describing them as the backbone of society and the home. She posed a poignant question, “Can we survive with a broken backbone?” Her statement echoes the urgency and significance of addressing gender-based violence, emphasizing the importance of collective action to create a society free from such harmful practices.
FCTA Calls for Solidarity in the Battle Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence
Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, the Mandate Secretary for the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, has issued a rallying cry, urging Nigerians to actively support the Orange the World campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
Emphasizing that the Orange the World 16 Days Activism is not a mere temporary endeavour but a sustained movement, Benjamins-Laniyi implored everyone to embrace and participate in the initiative.
Having participated in a rally alongside Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, and Senator Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the FCT, the mandate secretary declared the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism at the Unity Fountain, starting from the Eagles Square.
Benjamins-Laniyi passionately urged collective efforts to bring an end to sexual and gender-based violence, calling on individuals to actively engage in the cause.
