Asema Achado, the House of Representatives Member for Gwer East/Gwer West in Benue State, has called upon Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia to enforce the state’s anti-open grazing law.
Achado made this plea during a condolence visit to the Wa-Ndoo-Mbakyor community in Gwer East LGA following the tragic killing of 17 individuals on March 7, 2024, by armed invaders.
He stressed the urgency of implementing the anti-grazing prohibition law promptly and prosecuting those accountable for the attack on the Wa-Ndoo community.
Achado denounced the assault as an “unacceptable act of wickedness” and reiterated his commitment to serving his constituents by donating N1.2 million to the community to acquire seedlings for the upcoming farming season.
In response, representatives from the Wa-Ndoo community, Zaki Sakuma Tov, and Sir Simon Kofi (president of the Mbaikyor community in the diaspora), commended Achado for his dedication and compassion towards his constituency.
They appreciated the visit, underscoring its importance in demonstrating solidarity after recent attacks.
It was reported that the state government had previously issued a two-week ultimatum, which expired on March 6, 2023, to herders engaging in open grazing in the state, urging them to vacate.
The government warned of the commencement of implementing the grazing law following the expiration of the ultimatum.
