Famous South African Pastor, Huxley Bushiri, has been arrested for fraud and money laundering but his followers have reportedly taken to the streets protesting against the pastor spending two nights in jail.

Bushiri was arrested at an upmarket hotel in Rustenburg recently, and will be kept in custody until he appears before the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court in SA on Wednesday, February 4. He was arrested with his wife, Mary.

The arrest was confirmed by Bushiri’s church, the Enlightened Christian Gathering and the Hawks, although the pastor and his wife were not directly named.

The charges against the pastor and Mary are related to activity in 2015 that contravenes foreign exchange policies.

Hundreds of the pastor’s followers gathered to support the charismatic leader.

Some protesters dressed up as disciples and shouted “I want my daddy,” reported Times Live on social media.

The supporters also begged for the pastor’s release.

Bushiri’s loyal devotees were encouraged not to abandon the pastor by another religious leader, Pastor Mboro.

Africans on social media had differing responses to news of the protesters. Some users showed their solidarity questioning why the pastor was being victimised.

Others expressed disillusionment that people were supporting another corrupt leader, even defending a ‘rapi*t pastor’ referred to the recent incident in Mpumalanga, South Africa involving a 15-year-old girl.
