Men of Benue State Police Command have arrested ten (10) herdsmen for contravening the anti-open grazing prohibition law in Agatu local government area of Benue state.
While reacting to the arrest of the herdsmen, the Police Public Relations in the state, Kae Sewuese confirmed their arrest and revealed that they have been moved to the state criminal and investigation department (CID) in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state for investigation.
It was learnt that following the destruction of a larger rice farm by cattles of herdsmen in Agatu community led to the apprehension of the herdsmen.
According to reports, besides the destruction of yet to be harvested rice, the cattle destroyed many heaters of the commodity.
Security men were mobilised by the Chairman of the council, Hon. Usman Alilu and these security men were responsible for the arrest of the herders.
It was evident that they have violated the laws under Benue Anti open grazing prohibition law which states that no cattle must be seen roaming any part of Benue in the name of grazing.
Over 200 herdsmen have been convicted and 500 cattle confiscated and sold since the enactment of the law.
