COVID-19: Edo discharges six more patients, tests 5050 residents

Following the treatment of COVID-19 patients at various isolation facilities in the state, the Edo State Government has announced the recovery and discharge of six more Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients who have now tested negative for the virus and cleared to reunite with the society.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia while addressing journalists in Benin, the capital of Edo state.

Dr. Okundia said with the new figures, the number of patients successfully managed and discharged from the state’s isolation facilities has risen to 160.

He disclosed that the state also recorded 34 new confirmed cases, noting that Edo has now recorded a total of 729 confirmed cases and 31 COVID-19 related deaths.

Reassuring the people of Edo state, the commissioner said the state government will continue to intensify efforts to contain the pandemic and protect Edo people.

Dr. Okundia said the state has tested over 5050 residents, contact-tracing 2095 others and visited over 863 rural and urban communities for Active Case Search (ACS) activities.

Okundia said the state has recorded 4895 suspected cases and exited 1834 others, including 1488 line-listed contacts and 346 persons-of-interest (POI) who have completed the compulsory 14-day follow-up and tested negative.

The commissioner further appealed to residents to present or report themselves through the Edo State COVID-19 toll free response lines following any recent travel from high COVID-19 incident states within the country or contacts with persons with symptoms of the virus, adding, “This will further bolster government’s efforts at containing the pandemic and protecting the lives of the state’s aged population which accounts for over 60 percents of the deaths recorded”

He continued, “Stay at home and observe all precautionary measures against the spread of the infectious disease including regular handwashing with soap under running water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers. Cover your mouth and nose properly when sneezing and/or coughing.

“Two toll-free lines for COVID-19 response have been introduced by Edo State Government to strengthen the initial lines from the State Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) distributed at the onset of the outbreak.
