Some governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have strongly opposed the expulsion of Nyesom Wike, a former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from the party.
Recall that Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Ajibade, Nwachukwu, Mohammed, and some other notable figures were recently expelled from the party over alleged anti-party activities.
These party leaders were expelled during the party’s 20th National Convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, which was reportedly attended by over 3000 delegates.
However, the expulsion of Wike and others seems to have deteriorated and worsened the situation of things in the party as a result of emerging disagreements from some key stakeholders, which followed the decision.
WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the expulsion infuriated some key stakeholders, including some governors and party chieftains who had always appealed for internal and genuine reconciliation among warring factions in the party.
The expulsion has sparked controversy, leading to the open opposition of the move by two governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), namely, Ahmad Fintiri and Caleb Mutfwang.
The open opposition to the expulsion has further divided the party, as many supporters of these governors and chieftains who are members of the party also align with them.
Reacting to the move, the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmad Fintiri, stated that the decision is not in the best interest of the party and could plunge the PDP into further crisis.
He emphasized his commitment to peace, stability, and progress within the party.
He urged stakeholders to work towards healing divisions and striving for unity and cohesion.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, who distanced himself from the expulsion, portrayed it as “ill-timed.”
He stated that it could undermine efforts to stabilize the PDP.
He underlined the importance of unity, diplomacy, and common effort to rebuild and reposition the PDP, rather than punitive measures.
In response to the expulsion, the Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that it will hold an emergency meeting of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) today, November 18, 2025, at the NEC Hall of the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
The BoT meeting is set for 11:00 a.m., followed by the NEC meeting at 2:00 p.m.
