In a move to preserve and streamline their cultural heritage, the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) in Benue State has enacted significant changes, putting an end to exorbitant burial rites and simplifying marriage traditions.

The paramount ruler of the Idoma kingdom, Och’Idoma, Dr John Elaigwu Odogbo, delivered this impactful announcement during his New Year message in Otukpo, the heart of Idoma land.

Expressing concern over extravagant marriage and burial practices infiltrating their culture, the council, after extensive consultations with rulers, political leaders, and other stakeholders, implemented the following reforms:

Firstly, the cost of bride price in Idoma land has been standardized and is now fixed at a modest N50,000. This unified rate aims to eliminate stringent conditions and expectations associated with traditional marriages.

Secondly, the imposition of costly requirements on bereaved families during burial rites is now prohibited. The council advocates for affordable burial ceremonies, urging completion within two to three weeks from the date of death.

Moreover, the Och’Idoma emphasized the prohibition of practices where relatives deny the children and widows of the deceased their rightful inheritance. This progressive step seeks to ensure fair distribution of the deceased’s property among the rightful heirs.
